The day’s entertainment is a celebration of film and TV history, with lots of short films, newsreels, lost TV episodes and films on the big screen. The Plaza Community Cinema, Waterloo, opened on 2 September 1939 but was immediately closed again that same day due to regulations introduced by the outbreak of war! Following the reopening two weeks later, the cinema offered full film programmes and live variety entertainment from well known artists such as Tommy Handley, Arthur Askey, Charlie Chester, Ted Ray and Hilda Baker. In October 1995 there was local outcry when plans were announced to redevelop the cinema site. Local people came together to campaign and raise funds to rescue the cinema, which resulted in a charity being formed. Through local fundraising and volunteer support, the Plaza has been lovingly restored to pristine Art Deco style glory, even the seats are upholstered with fabric rescued from the Orient Express!
