This popular 1957 TV series starred John Hart as Nat Cutler (aka “Hawkeye”) and Lon Chaney Jr as Chingachgook, the last surviving member of the Mohican tribe. John Hart had played the Lone Ranger, as well as acting in numerous westerns. Lon Chaney Jr., the son of Lon Chaney, featured alongside Gene Autry in The Singing Cowboy (1936), and made many films with 20th Century Fox and Universal Pictures, where he became a horror star. In 1957, Chaney travelled to Ontario, Canada to co-star with Hart in the first ever American-Canadian television production, Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans.   Loosely based on James Fenimore Cooper’s novel The Last of the Mohicans, published in 1826, the series portrayed a realistic view of frontier America with the settlers depicted as rugged people, carving out new lives in the small settlements of the wilderness. The Native Americans were portrayed as intelligent people with good and bad individuals among them. The stories take place in the 1750s, during the French and Indian War in the Hudson Valley. The plotlines follow Hawkeye and Chingachgook as they encounter redcoats from the British army, rescue settlers trapped in Indian territory and attempt to integrate the communities of Indian tribes and settlers. Themes include murder, witchcraft, robbery and kidnap. The two brave heroes take on bandits, warring tribesmen and renegade soldiers, always endeavouring to bring justice and peace to the frontier. The series was filmed in the city of Pickering, just east of Toronto, on a local farmstead and in a nearby valley. Sets were erected to include a complete log village  from 1757 and a lake was used for water scenes, with an Indian village of teepees installed beside it. The series was the first to be shot in Canada, using local talent for much of the cast, extras being bussed to Pickering from Toronto. Local newspapers documented the filming with great excitement, noting that youngsters were besieging the building where Hart and Chaney were staying, attempting to catch a sight of “The Lone Ranger”.
